Ghana to Relocate AFCON Qualifiers, Nigeria Likely to Host
Due to CAF’s recent rejection of the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Ghana’s Black Stars will have to play their remaining 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) home qualifiers outside of the country. Reports suggest Nigeria is a likely option for hosting the crucial matches.
CAF’s decision came after an inspection team flagged several issues at the Kumasi stadium, including inadequate drainage, uneven playing surfaces, and inconsistent grass coverage, making it unfit for international competition. With Ghana’s other venues, such as Cape Coast and Accra Sports Stadiums, also failing to meet CAF’s standards, the nation is left without an approved stadium.

In response, CAF has directed the Ghana Football Association to find an alternative venue for their upcoming qualifiers in October. The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria, is the leading choice due to its proximity and modern facilities. This 30,000-seat stadium currently serves as the home ground for Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
Other potential venues being considered include Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Côte d’Ivoire, Japoma Stadium in Douala, Cameroon, and the Berkane Municipal Stadium in Morocco. The Ghana Football Association is expected to make its final decision in the coming days.
